What's Actually New On Polk Street This Summer, And Where It Fits In The Russian Hill Rotation

What's New on Polk Street in Russian Hill This Summer

The useful read on Russian Hill Polk Street new openings is simpler than the rumor mill makes it sound.

As of July 11, 2026, most of the anticipated projects on upper Polk are still pending. Bageletto has been announced but is not confirmed open. Jupiter Room has conflicting summer and fall timelines. Handroll Hawker and The Jug Shop are works in progress. FITNESS SF is scheduled for September.

The confirmed 2026 restaurant openings are mostly farther south on Polk, outside the upper Russian Hill cluster.

That may sound like a quiet summer. It is not. The projects in motion are aimed at different parts of the day, from a sit-down bagel breakfast to casual handrolls, late-night martinis, specialty wine shopping, and a large neighborhood gym.

Polk is not adding five versions of the same thing. It is filling gaps in the daily rotation.

The short version: open, pending, or coming later

Business Status as of July 11, 2026 Where it fits
Goldenette Open at 1601 Polk Breakfast, lunch, burgers, casual dinner
Denya Ramen Open at 1639 Polk Lunch, solo ramen, casual dinner
The Golden Yak Open at 1426 Polk Nepali and Indian lunch or dinner
Bageletto Announced, not confirmed open Sit-down breakfast and bagel sandwiches
Jupiter Room Announced for 2026 Martinis, bar food, late-night plans
Handroll Hawker Under development Casual, takeout-friendly handrolls
The Jug Shop Return in progress Wine, beer, spirits, and host-gift errands
FITNESS SF Polk Scheduled for September Workouts, classes, and weekday foot traffic

There is one geographic distinction to keep straight. Goldenette, Denya Ramen, and The Golden Yak are part of the broader Polk corridor, but they are south of the upper Polk stretch around Pacific, Broadway, Vallejo, Green, and Union.

They count as new on Polk. They should not be presented as if they all opened in Russian Hill.

Bageletto could change the morning routine, but it has not done so yet

Bageletto announced a second location in the former Peet’s space between Broadway and Vallejo. The plan calls for a sit-down cafe, with bagels delivered from the Mission kitchen in small batches at least twice daily.

The expected menu includes sandwiches, rotating schmears, cured-in-house meats, and specialty bagel flavors such as Calabrian chile and cheese. That is a fuller breakfast and lunch format than a basic bakery counter.

The timing remains the key caveat. An April report projected an opening within 60 to 90 days, but Bageletto’s official site still listed only its Mission location near the current research date. Published reports also conflict on the exact Polk address.

For now, the honest status is coming, but not confirmed open.

Once it opens, Bageletto should fit neatly between two established habits:

  1. Coffee first at Saint Frank, which currently operates at 2340 Polk from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
  2. Groceries or prepared food at Bi-Rite Market, which currently operates at 2140 Polk from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Bageletto would provide the sit-down meal between those stops. Saint Frank remains the coffee-first option. Bi-Rite remains the practical grocery anchor. The new cafe would fill the bagel-sandwich and longer-breakfast slot.

That is a real addition to the rotation. It is also one residents should wait to call open until the business says so.

The openings you can actually visit are farther south

The clearest confirmed addition is Goldenette, which opened February 16 in the former Toast space at 1601 Polk.

The retro diner comes from former WesBurger chef Wes Rowe and Toast Eatery owner Eddie Naser. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with breakfast sandwiches and burritos, smash burgers, a double-patty melt, chicken sandwiches, salads, milkshakes, and bread-pudding French toast.

Its role is straightforward: Goldenette is for the day when nobody wants to book, dress up, or debate the menu for 20 minutes. It works as an easy breakfast, a casual lunch, or an uncomplicated burger dinner.

A few blocks away, Denya Ramen opened at 1639 Polk. Its compact menu focuses on pork and chicken ramen, with toppings presented separately from the broth and noodles. The setup suits lunch, a solo meal, or a casual dinner with a small group.

Farther south, The Golden Yak opened at 1426 Polk. The family-owned, women-led restaurant serves Nepali and Indian food from lunch through dinner.

These businesses broaden the choices along Polk as a whole. They do not replace the upper Polk anchors. They give Russian Hill residents a reason to extend the walk south when the usual few blocks are not the plan.

Upper Polk’s next competition is about format, not cuisine

Handroll Hawker is under development at 2360 Polk, in the space that previously held Tonic and later Zero&. The public concept is “sushi on-the-go,” with a casual, takeout-friendly approach. Construction and sign activity have been reported, but no reliable opening date has been announced.

The obvious comparison is Saru Handroll Bar at 2206 Polk. Saru is walk-in only, with a counter-focused experience built around seasonal fish, edomae-style handrolls, and traditional technique.

Calling this a handroll battle would be entertaining and premature. The more useful distinction is how each place expects to be used.

Saru is an intentional counter meal. Handroll Hawker appears to be aiming for a quicker stop that can fit lunch, takeout, or an unplanned bite.

Those formats can serve different needs even when the menus overlap. The practical questions will be speed, seating, price, hours, and whether Handroll Hawker delivers on its grab-and-go positioning. Until it opens, those details remain unanswered.

Jupiter Room would add a missing late-night option

Jupiter Room is planned for 2065 Polk at Broadway in the former Lord Stanley space. The concept comes from former Aphotic chef Peter Hemsley and bar director Trevin Hutchins.

The plan centers on martinis, variations on classic cocktails, nonalcoholic options, nostalgic bar food and desserts, and late-night service. Food is also expected through the Broadway-facing takeout window.

The timing is less settled than the concept. Jupiter Room’s official site says summer 2026, while the San Francisco Chronicle’s 2026 opening guide projects fall. No exact opening date was confirmed in the available research.

The safe description is announced for 2026, with current timelines ranging from summer to fall.

If it opens as planned, Jupiter Room will not compete directly with every polished dinner nearby. It has a different job.

Nisei at 2316 Polk remains the planned, special-occasion end of the street. Chef David Yoshimura’s Japanese American restaurant currently holds one Michelin star and serves dinner Wednesday through Sunday. Its sister lounge, Bar Iris, is next door and generally accepts walk-ins, with reservations available for groups of six to ten.

Jupiter Room would create another lane: drinks before dinner, bar food instead of a full reservation, or a later stop after the kitchen elsewhere has closed. That is a useful addition on a street where the difference between “let’s plan dinner” and “let’s get one drink” matters.

Two non-restaurant projects may have the bigger daily impact

Food openings get the attention, but The Jug Shop and FITNESS SF could change more weekly routines.

The Jug Shop is working toward a return at 1590 Pacific Avenue at Polk. An alcohol-license transfer notice and active construction were reported in March. There is no reliable opening date, so this remains a comeback in progress.

Its eventual return would restore a specialty retail stop to the Pacific and Polk corner. That fits the practical errand circuit with Cheese Plus at 2001 Polk, Bi-Rite, and Russian Hill Bookstore.

Cheese Plus remains useful for sandwiches, specialty food, wine, beer, catering, and the last-minute host gift. Russian Hill Bookstore at 2162 Polk is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily and gives the corridor a non-food anchor between coffee and groceries.

Then there is FITNESS SF Polk, scheduled to open in September at 1600 Jackson Street.

The former Lombardi Sports building is about 44,000 square feet and had been vacant for roughly a decade. Plans include strength and cardio areas, classes, personal training, recovery amenities, and dedicated parking.

That scale matters. A cafe changes one corner at breakfast. A large gym can affect the sidewalk before work, after work, and throughout the weekend. It may also create steady foot traffic for nearby coffee, lunch, and grocery businesses.

This is the project to watch heading into fall, even if it does not qualify as a summer opening.

So what belongs in the Russian Hill rotation now?

Here is the practical version, without pretending every coming-soon sign has become an open door.

For a normal morning

Start with Saint Frank. Add Bageletto only after the business confirms that its Polk cafe is open.

For errands that turn into lunch

Use Russian Hill Bookstore, Bi-Rite, and Cheese Plus as the core circuit. Goldenette or Denya Ramen can extend the trip south when you want a full meal.

For casual Japanese food

Saru remains the established walk-in handroll counter. Handroll Hawker may become the faster alternative, but its opening date and final service format still need confirmation.

For an evening with a plan

Nisei remains the reservation-driven special-occasion option, with Bar Iris next door for drinks.

For an evening without much of a plan

Jupiter Room is the project to watch. Its martini, bar-food, and late-night format would serve the spontaneous end of the evening, but it is not confirmed open.

For the fall routine

FITNESS SF at Jackson is likely to be the most substantial daily-use addition. September is the current target.

The candid takeaway

Upper Polk is not having a summer packed with completed openings. It is having a summer of visible transition.

Bageletto, Jupiter Room, Handroll Hawker, and The Jug Shop are still pending. FITNESS SF is scheduled for fall. The businesses that have already opened in 2026 are concentrated farther south on Polk.

What makes the pipeline useful is the mix. Breakfast, takeout, late-night drinks, specialty retail, and fitness serve different parts of the day. If those projects open as planned, Polk will have a more complete daily rhythm without losing the established stops residents already use.

Check each business’s official site before making a special trip. Opening timelines move, especially when construction and permits are involved. San Francisco has many strengths. Predicting a restaurant opening to the day is not always one of them.

If changes along Polk are part of a larger question about buying, selling, or improving a Russian Hill property, I’m happy to talk through the practical details and coordinate the right lenders, inspectors, insurance contacts, contractors, or staging team.
